Musical scores frequently specify the instrument or voice for which they are written. These indications affect the timbre of the piece, and may be given on the cover page or in the title information of a composition, or specific instruments may be identified on the left side of a score. Notice how the designations in Figure 1-15 specify that the top four staves are for singers of specific voice ranges (that is, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass), while the bottom grand staff is intended for piano.
